Severini began his painting career in 1900 as a student of Giacomo Balla, an Italian pointillist painter who later became a prominent Futurist. His style is predominantly avant-garde, with an influence of Russian cubo-futurism and cubism. In his lifetime, New York billionaire Sheldon Solow assembled a $500m private collection of art, featuring pieces by Picasso, Lichtenstein and Cézanne.
